Coimbatore, also known as the ‘Manchester of South India’, ‘Cotton Country’, ‘Poor Man's Ooty’ or the ‘Detroit of South’ is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu and is one of the fastest growing cities in India.
Coimbatore is situated on the banks of river Noyyal & at the foothills of the Nilgiri Mountains at an altitude of 432 meters above mean sea level in the rain shadow region of Western Ghats. Because of its proximity to the hills, it enjoys an excellent climate throughout the year. Coimbatore experiences a mild winter and moderate summers and a salubrious climate. It is also known for its peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprises.
Covering an area 105.5 sq.kms, the city houses some of the biggest names in the Indian Industry. It is well known for its textile industries and has excellent potential for growth. In spite of its prominence as a bustling industrial city, Coimbatore still remains as one of the most pollution free cities in India. The people of Coimbatore are educated, polite and rich with entrepreneurial skills. The major industries apart from textile mills & textile machineries are automobile spares, motors, electronics, steel and aluminum foundries. Agriculture however still remains the major occupation. The major reason for high industrial growth and prosperity of the city is due to the availability of copious water supply and power.
The city is studded with educational institutions, which include many engineering colleges of repute, two medical colleges, one dental college, several paramedical colleges, an Agricultural University, a Forest college and a large number of arts & science colleges.
In spite of its industrial and technical growth, traditions and age-old customs are still held in high esteem. The temples bear testimony to the religiousness, love for art and architecture of the people
